Changes to Facilities Design and Construction Underway 3/30/17

Resource Management and Planning is pleased to announce that Facilities Design and Construction is restructuring to provide more efficient planning and implementation for future capital projects. With UC San Diego undergoing a significant transformation due to growth in student enrollment, the light rail coming to campus, a Long Range Development Plan update, the campus’s carefully crafted Strategic Plan and a system wide goal of carbon neutrality by 2025, this restructuring will better enable us to meet the needs of our campus customers.

Facilities Design and Construction currently implements the capital improvement program, which includes project planning, schematic design, design development, bidding and award of contracts. The department will now separate into two units as follows:

  • Campus Architect and Planning (CAP) – Responsible for capital program strategies, this unit will oversee all planning functions including physical, community, environmental, capital, transportation and space planning. CAP will also be responsible for development services functions including building permits and inspection services as well as quality control and standards peer review including Design Review Board, ADA, seismic and UCOP mandates. This unit will be led by Joel King, assistant vice chancellor and campus architect.
  • Capital Program Management (CPM) – Responsible for capital program implementation, this unit will handle program management and delivery, design and construction contracting and fiscal accounts payable. Recruitment is underway for a new executive director to lead this unit.

As part of the restructuring, Facilities Management will assume responsibility for all current and future projects under $750,000 including building renovations, rehabs and repurposing.
