Incentives

HOV Lane Access

The California Air Resources Board is responsible for the official list of vehicles qualified to receive Clean Air Vehicle decals allowing solo drivers use of High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes. The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) is responsible for accepting applications and issuing decals to qualified vehicles. The California DMV began issuing the 2019 purple decal on January 1, 2019 to qualifying vehicles. These decals are for first-time applications only and will expire on January 1, 2023. Check the official list to determine if the EV you are interested in qualifies for a purple decal. More HOV program information

State and Federal Electric Vehicle Incentives

Three basic programs provide electric vehicle leasing or purchasing incentives: California Clean Vehicle Rebate Project (CVRP), federal tax credits and SDG&E rebates. EV drivers must complete an application to receive these incentives. See State and Federal Electric Vehicle Incentives for an overview of these options and valuable links to guide you through the process.

SDG&E Rebate

In 2018, more than 13,500 SDG&E customers earned a $200 Electric Vehicle Climate Credit for driving a clean vehicle. SDG&E is no longer accepting 2018 applications.

The credit will be available in 2019 as part of the California Air Resources Board's effort to reduce greenhouse emissions in California. Unlike state and federal rebates, electric vehicle drivers can apply for this credit each year they own or lease the vehicle. Check 2019 program details

Research Study Participation

UC San Diego and its research partners will invite anyone who leases or purchases one of these vehicles to participate in an electric vehicle user study. Study participants will share information on their electric vehicle driving and charging experiences. This is an opt-in study and there is no obligation to participate.

INVENT Project

The Intelligent Electric Vehicle Integration (INVENT) Large Scale Seamless Vehicle Grid Integration Project is a collaboration between UC San Diego’s Center for Energy Research and San Diego-based technology company, Nuvve Corp. The purpose of this project is to demonstrate the real-world benefits of advanced Vehicle-Grid Integration (VGI) applications for electric vehicles (EVs), including smart charging and bi-directional sharing of EV batteries when not needed (e.g., when parked and sufficiently charged) in exchange for benefits or savings.

The project will build on the university’s existing electric vehicle charging infrastructure network and install an additional 50+ charging stations on and around campus through 2020. The project will also recruit a diverse array of drivers from the campus community to participate and leverage the new charging infrastructure. Participants will receive a dedicated parking space and free vehicle charging at UC San Diego. See the INVENT flyer (PDF).

If you currently drive an electric vehicle and would like to participate in this innovative research project, please complete the INVENT Driver Recruitment Survey.
